UNIBEN Cricket Team
The University of Benin (UNIBEN) dominated the 27th Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) cricket competition, clinching gold medals in both the men’s and women’s categories.
In the men’s event, UNIBEN scored 8.136 points, outpacing the University of Jos (UNIJOS) with 2.036 points and the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) with 9.900 points.
UNIBEN was the only institution to field a female team, earning a walkover and claiming the gold medal.
Speaking to Campulse News, UNIBEN cricket coach Musa Jimoh hailed his team’s performance but criticised the organisation of the competition. “This was one of the most poorly organised NUGA events I’ve attended. Many universities did not bring their full contingents, which affected participation,” he said.
Jimoh also highlighted the growing prominence of cricket in Nigeria, noting the introduction of a dedicated female category. “Previously, female players could only blend into male teams. Now they compete in their own category, which is a positive development,” he said.
On his team’s dominance, Jimoh added: “Edo State remains the centre of excellence for cricket in Nigeria. Many of our players are from Edo, benefiting from top training facilities and national exposure. That experience gave UNIBEN a clear advantage.”
UNIBEN’s performance continues its strong showing in university cricket, underscoring the university’s position as a powerhouse in the sport.
