OAU Approves N15bn Faculty of Architecture Project

Prof Adebayo Bamire, Vice-Chancellor of OAU

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has approved plans for a new Faculty of Architecture, a project the institution describes as a significant step in its academic expansion drive.

The N15bn development was endorsed by the university management, led by Vice-Chancellor Prof Adebayo Bamire, on November 6. The proposal originated in 2022 when the National Universities Commission approved six new programmes for a dedicated architecture faculty. Former Head of Department, Prof Adesoji Jiboye, first championed the idea, which has since grown into one of the university’s most significant infrastructure commitments.

Momentum increased at the Ife Architecture Summit 2.0 held in May, where the President of the Nigerian Institute of Architects, Mobolaji Adeniyi, pledged the institute’s support.

University management, the NIA Osun chapter and students agreed to deepen collaboration in architectural training.

A design concept prepared by three alumni from the 1995/1996 set — Akintunde Akinajo, Dare Sanni and Femi Ogunlana — was presented during the management meeting.

The NIA Osun chapter also presented Prof Bamire with an Award of Excellence for his support. A visit and prayer session at the proposed site marked the symbolic start of the project.

The new faculty will house five departments: Architecture and Design, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, and Furniture and Product Design.
