On World Science Day – Nigeria’s Research Labs Must Become Engines of Innovation

In a bid to commemorate the United Nations’ World Science Day for Peace and Development, Nigeria once again faces a sober reminder of its unrealized potential in science and technology. While the nation boasts dozens of research institutes and a youthful population bubbling with talent, the systems to transform science into solutions that touch everyday lives remain weak.


Years ago, the federal government sought to change the science and technology narrative and drive strategic growth by investing in the establishment of over 60 research institutes across various sectors, ranging from agriculture to industrial technology. However, unfortunately, decades have passed, and the government has yet to reap meaningful results from its investments.


Many of the institutions today are a shadow of their former self, producing little that impacts the average Nigerian. Meanwhile, many other countries that took similar steps around the same time have since fully embraced science and technology, and are reaping the rewards in economic growth, job creation, and global competitiveness. Experts have long described Nigeria’s situation as a “leaky STEM pipeline.”

Thousands of students begin their educational journeys with enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), but only a few emerge with the practical skills needed to innovate or solve real-world problems. One primary reason is infrastructure. Across the country, many schools lack functioning science laboratories, computers, and internet access. For many pupils, science experiments remain more fictional than real, as they are confined to the pages of textbooks rather than hands-on experiences with wires, batteries, or microscopes.


Equally worrying is the shortage of qualified teachers in the STEM fields. It is a fact that many STEM teachers lack exposure to modern learning tools such as coding, robotics, or artificial intelligence. As a result of these shortfalls, students are left with no choice but to memorize vast quantities of scientific theories, rather than investing time to explore creative solutions. Another major hindrance to STEM education in Nigeria is irregular power supply and poor internet connectivity. This makes digital learning an uphill task. Gender imbalance has also been a significant concern. In several communities, especially in Northern Nigeria, deep-rooted stereotypes are common and discourage girls from pursuing science-related careers, leaving women grossly underrepresented in Nigeria’s STEM workforce.
Experts have repeatedly warned that science must serve as a unifying and transformative force. They have argued that innovation should not be elitist, but inclusive, as this will help to build stronger economies and peaceful communities.


A recently published report titled “Major Barriers to STEM Education in Nigeria, and How We Can Overcome Them” emphasised the need for collaboration between the government, the private sector, educators, and local communities. The report called for the construction of affordable laboratories, intensive teacher training, and the adoption of a modern school curriculum that integrates artificial intelligence, robotics, and renewable energy. As the world celebrates Science Day, the message for Nigeria is clear: science must move from the sidelines to the center of national development. With the right investment and collective effort, Nigeria’s research labs can once become centres for innovation, peace, and progress.
