The Chairman of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) Governing Board, Dr Saliu Mustapha, states that the Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) is crucial to enhancing standards in the teaching profession.
He stated this while monitoring the May 2025 PQE at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) CBT centre in Abuja.Dr Mustapha stated that the examination ensures that only qualified teachers are permitted in classrooms. He revealed that the Federal Ministry of Education is developing an IT-driven platform to help parents verify the certification status of their children’s teachers.
He noted that the initiative is part of broader reforms by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, aimed at removing unqualified teachers through the use of technology.
He also commended the smooth conduct of the examination and the high turnout across the country, describing it as a positive sign for the future of the profession.
Acting TRCN Registrar Stella Nwokeocha stated that over 13,700 candidates took the examination nationwide, with 594 at the Abuja centre. She said the exercise went well, though some states had to adjust their schedules due to a clash with the rescheduled UTME.
A representative of the Minister of Education, Ismaila Adiatu, described the exercise as well-organised and impressive.
Dr Jacinta Ezeahurukwe, Director of Certification and Licensing at TRCN, stated that the results will be released within a week after collation and management approval. She called for more funding to help the Council maintain its regulatory duties.
