The Owa Obokun Adimula and Paramount Ruler of Ijesaland, Owa Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, has condemned excessive rent hikes in student-heavy communities, describing them as irresponsible and detrimental to education.
Speaking at Obokungbusi City Hall while addressing newly installed chiefs, Owa Haastrup urged traditional leaders to use their positions to serve the people rather than exploit them. “Leadership is about impact, not profit,” he said.
The monarch announced plans to construct private hostels aimed at alleviating accommodation shortages for students, enabling them to focus on their studies without financial strain. He called on wealthy Ijesas to support initiatives that enhance student welfare and strengthen community development.
Owa Haastrup stressed that leaders who prioritise the welfare of others will be rewarded, while those who exploit residents will face consequences. His intervention follows recent protests by students of the University of Ilesa, who petitioned the monarch over skyrocketing rents in their host communities.
Current market rates show self-contained rooms fetching as much as N250,000, including agent fees, a figure that places considerable pressure on students.
The Owa Obokun’s announcement signals a commitment to building inclusive solutions for student accommodation and underscores the role of traditional leadership in supporting education and community well-being.
