The Niger State Police have commenced the registration of students and teachers abducted from a school in Papiri, Agwara Local Government, last week. Parents of the affected children and staff were called in to provide details of those missing, after authorities admitted there was no reliable data on the number of victims or those who have returned.
Police Public Relations Officer SP Wasiu Abiodun confirmed the initiative, noting that parents were asked to provide information about children who have been reunited with their families. Reports indicate that over 259 students and 13 teachers were kidnapped, while 66 escaped under unclear circumstances.
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago said the government could not yet confirm the exact number of abducted students or those recovered. He added that the school had been officially closed since 2021, and the government never issued a countermanding order for its reopening. The missionary who founded the school has relocated to Ireland, and foreign personnel who later managed it have also left.
The governor assured that an investigation would follow at the appropriate time to clarify the circumstances surrounding the abduction.
