Prof. Roseline Adejare, a lecturer of the Department of Language, Arts, and Social Science Education, Lagos State University, LASU, has revealed that a particular teacher commits grammatical and verb-group-related errors. The lecturer disclosed this at LASU’s 107th Inaugural Lecture, titled “Is, Was, Choose One: Exploration into the World of the English Verb and Other Aspects of English Grammar.” Adejare raised an alarm about the subsequent decrease in teachers’ English standards in schools. She said, “We do not teach grammar any longer, and there are no qualified people to teach grammar because nobody studies grammar. In the study that I have conducted, I tried to establish a link between teachers’ competence in the language of instruction and the standard of education.”
The professor stated that the verb is central to the clause and central to meaning realisation. “If you do not know the verb, you do not know the language. Teachers are not adequately trained; those teaching them in the university often conduct research that involves social and discourse analysis. They leave grammar out because they think it is difficult, and when you do not know the grammar of a language, you do not know that grammar in that language”, she stated.
