PSN President Prof. Ayuba Tanko
The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) has urged a comprehensive redefinition of the country’s pharmacy workforce to align with global best practices.
Speaking at the 98th Annual National Conference of the PSN, tagged DABO 2025 in Kano, PSN President Prof. Ayuba Tanko reaffirmed that only Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians are globally recognised, commending the Federal Government for banning the training of “Pharmacy Technologists.”
Tanko announced that the PSN and the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) had won a landmark court case confirming PCN’s authority to regulate veterinary drugs nationwide.
He also revealed progress in welfare negotiations for public sector pharmacists, including improved allowances and the extension of the retirement age for Consultant Pharmacists to 70 years.
The PSN President advocated for the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.) as the minimum qualification for practice and called for the creation of a National Postgraduate College of Pharmacy to enhance expertise and promote professional development.
Tanko urged universities and regulators to strengthen pharmacy education through adequate funding and strict compliance with professional standards.
