Rep Atu Donates Mobile Science Labs to Boost Learning in Enugu Schools

Students in Enugu North/South Federal Constituency now have access to modern science education tools, thanks to a new initiative by House of Representatives member Chimaobi Atu. The lawmaker has renovated and installed three mobile smart science laboratories in selected public secondary schools in the area. The benefiting schools include Comprehensive Secondary School, Akwuke; Community Secondary School, Ugwuaji; and Day Secondary School, Independence Layout. Unveiled between Tuesday and Wednesday, the mobile labs are designed to improve hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects.

According to Rep Atu, the project was born out of his visit to several schools in his constituency, where he found that many science labs were either poorly maintained or non-existent. “We discovered that most of the science laboratories were either in terrible condition or completely absent,” he said.

The smart labs, which are mobile and fully equipped, can support over 220 major science experiments, all aligned with the current SSCE curriculum. He described the gesture as a pilot phase, with a plan to extend the initiative to the remaining 24 public schools in the constituency.

“We want to make impacts that generations will remember. Our children deserve the best… Tomorrow belongs to them, and they need all the tools to compete globally,” Atu added. Principals and teachers expressed excitement at the development. Mrs. Stella Ogbonnia, Principal of Comprehensive Secondary School, Akwuke, said: “I have not seen this before, and it is commendable. This will attract more students to go into science subjects.”

Mrs. Nneoma Okoro, a science teacher at Community Secondary School, Ugwuaji, called the innovation a game-changer: “It will make learning more engaging and interactive for our students.” Students were also thrilled with the mobile labs. Emeka Onyeji, a student at Day Secondary School, said: “I love science, and now I can conduct experiments in a fun and practical way.”

Chiamaka Nwosu, from Comprehensive Secondary School, Akwuke, added: “I have always struggled with understanding some concepts, but now I can see and experience them. This will help us compete better globally.” The Traditional Ruler of Akwuke Uwani, Igwe C.A. Ekwomchi, praised the initiative and assured Rep Atu of the community’s commitment to safeguarding the labs.

“We appreciate Rep Atu’s efforts. We will make sure the labs are well-maintained for our students’ benefit,” he said. This move by Rep Atu is being widely applauded as a bold step towards reviving science education and equipping students with tools to thrive in the 21st-century knowledge economy.
