The House of Representatives has urged the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government to prioritise the interests of students and national development as the union’s two-week warning strike enters its second week.
The lawmakers made the call on Tuesday while resolving to intervene in the dispute between the two parties. The decision followed a motion by Sesi Whingan, who said the House leadership’s intervention aims to find a lasting solution to the recurring industrial crisis that has paralysed Nigeria’s public universities.
ASUU began the strike on Monday after a 14-day ultimatum to the government expired. The lecturers are demanding the implementation of the renegotiated 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement, payment of withheld salaries and promotion arrears, and revitalisation of public universities.
The House mandated its committees on University Education and Labour to engage both sides and propose a resolution. Meanwhile, Education Minister Tunji Alausa has directed vice-chancellors to enforce the government’s “No Work, No Pay” policy, as the strike continues to disrupt academic activities nationwide.
