Reps move to train Nigerian youths with practical skills

The House of Representatives Committee on Alternative Education is developing a comprehensive plan to reduce youth unemployment and support Nigeria’s growth by equipping young people with valuable job skills. The chairman, Hon. Ibrahim Almustapha, stated that it is crucial to provide Nigerian youths with proper training in handwork and business, enabling them to succeed in today’s rapidly changing world.

Currently, the committee is reviewing nine bills that aim to establish skill training centres in all 774 local government areas across Nigeria. These centres will help Nigerians, especially those who did not attend school, acquire useful skills, enabling them to take care of themselves and contribute to the country’s economy.

Hon. Almustapha said, “This is not just an idea; it is something Nigeria must do.” He also said that everyone needs to work together to ensure the bills cover the needs of all parts of the country. At the public hearing, various individuals, including teachers, government officials, NGOs, and business leaders, shared their perspectives on the plan. Hon. Almustapha thanked the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, for starting the Committee on Alternative Education. He said the Speaker made a smart move to help Nigerians get non-formal education and training. The Speaker, represented by Hon. Alexander Mascot, said the House is serious about helping youths through skill training. He added, “These training centres are not just a policy—they are a promise to our country’s future.”

Many people who attended the hearing said they believe the bills will help young people start their businesses and support Nigeria’s plan to grow its industries. Hon. Olatunji Akinosi stated that Nigeria places too much emphasis on school certificates. He believes the country should focus more on teaching people practical skills. Other lawmakers, like Hon. Ikwechegh and Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, also shared their opinions. The Honourable Ikwechegh stated that the government should release funds to support the existing skill centres. Hon. Onwusibe said some local governments may need other important institutions more.

The goal of the Committee is to give Nigerian youths a genuine opportunity to succeed in today’s competitive job market. As Hon. Almustapha said, “The future of Nigeria is in the hands of our youths. It is our duty to give them the support they need. By giving them education and skills, we can build a better future for everyone.”
