Edith Declan, a US-based Nigerian oncology researcher and nurse practitioner, has urged the federal government to make yearly preventive health screenings free for everyone.
She explained that early detection can help minimise the rate of deaths caused by cancer.
Addressing the limitations of cancer control in Nigeria, she emphasised the absence of structured preventive healthcare and public awareness.
Declan recommended prevention as the first step in managing cancer, saying, “We can begin with awareness, early screening, and lifestyle modifications. That is where government policy can make the biggest difference.”
The researcher further implored the government to empower existing oncology institutes and research centres and collaborate with global pharmaceutical companies to conduct cancer research in Nigeria.
