The Russian Federation has proposed an increase in its annual scholarship quota for Nigerian students, currently set at 220. The offer was made during a meeting between officials of the Russian Embassy and Nigeria’s Ministry of Information and Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy, held in Abuja.
Discussions also covered cultural cooperation, youth development through creative industries, and plans for bilateral cultural exchange programmes. Russian Ambassador A.L. Podelyshev invited Nigeria to participate in the upcoming Kazan Cultural Fair in November and proposed reviving a Memorandum of Understanding on cultural collaboration that has been dormant for two years.
He said Russia is also exploring joint theatre training programmes with Nigerian institutions and plans to support Nigeria in preserving its cultural heritage using digital tools, such as 3D scanning and virtual reality.
In response, the Nigerian side proposed including creative economy and audiovisual co-productions in future bilateral agreements. Both parties agreed to designate focal points and timelines for follow-up. The Russian Embassy stated that it is awaiting Nigeria’s formal proposal outlining the priority areas for cooperation.
