Sant’Anna, Swinburne Lead Advances in XR, Medical Tech


The Institute of Mechanical Intelligence at Italy’s Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa hosted the European SUN XR project meeting on November 14.


Funded by the European Union and coordinated by the CNR “Alessandro Faedo” Institute of Information Science and Technologies, the project focuses on advanced extended reality (XR) technologies. Sant’Anna’s research group, led by Associate Prof Daniele Leonardis, presented innovations in XR systems, haptic interfaces, body tracking, and biometric monitoring for medical and industrial applications. A public demonstration was held at the TeCIP Institute.


Separately, Australia’s Swinburne University of Technology and the Bionics Institute announced a strategic partnership to accelerate the development of medical devices.


The collaboration will combine Swinburne’s facilities, including its unique human imaging capabilities, with BI’s expertise in devices like cochlear implants and epilepsy monitors. The initiative aims to translate research into clinical solutions, advance patient outcomes and provide hands-on training for students in biomedical engineering and related fields.


Both initiatives demonstrate a growing focus on integrating cutting-edge technology with real-world applications in health, industry and education.


The Swinburne-BI collaboration officially begins on January 1 2026, while SUN XR continues its EU-funded work in XR innovation across Italy.
