Four researchers from São Tomé and Príncipe have completed a one-month intensive training at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Ibadan. The training, held in partnership with the COMPRAN project, aimed to strengthen agricultural research and crop improvement in the island nation.
The participants, from the country’s national research institute (CIAT-STP), were trained in modern farming technologies, including tissue culture, virus detection, molecular biology, and digital field tools. They learned how to utilise advanced laboratory methods, such as DNA extraction, PCR, and ELISA, to detect plant diseases in crops like yam, cassava, and banana.
They also collaborated closely with IITA scientists on seed health, conservation, and the rapid multiplication of crops using hydroponics. The programme emphasised hands-on learning and practical skills to help improve food security in São Tomé. The team praised the experience and promised to use the knowledge to boost agriculture in their country.
