Scientists Discover New Way to Treat Rare Ovarian Cancer

Researchers have found a new way to treat a rare type of ovarian cancer that mostly affects younger women and does not respond well to regular chemotherapy.

The cancer, known as low-grade serous carcinoma (LGSC), grows slowly but can become dangerous if not caught early. It often starts as a harmless tumour called a serous borderline tumour, which can later turn into cancer. The study, done by a team of international scientists led by Prof. Ernst Lengyel and Prof. Matthias Mann, used a new technology called Deep Visual Proteomics. A new scientific method is helping researchers understand how rare ovarian cancer grows — and could lead to better treatment. Using a modern technology called Deep Visual Proteomics, scientists were able to study thousands of proteins within cancer cells and observe how they change as the disease progresses.

Through this, they found a special protein called NOVA2, which was only seen in the cancerous form of the tumour. Experts believe this protein might act like a “switch” that turns the tumour from harmless to dangerous.

The researchers did not stop there. They tried treating the cancer using two drugs — Mirciclib, which blocks cancer cell growth, and Mirvetuximab, which attacks and kills the cancer cells. When tested on mice, the drugs made the tumours shrink significantly.

Although the treatment still requires further testing and has not been tried on humans yet, the scientists remain optimistic. Women with this rare cancer, known as low-grade serous carcinoma (LGSC), currently have minimal treatment options. Lead researcher, Lisa Schweizer, said: “This is a big step in helping us understand this disease. It also shows how new technology can help us find better ways to treat cancer.” Experts say this discovery could lead to more precise and effective treatments for cancers that are typically challenging to manage.
