A recent study by a University of Portsmouth physicist proposes that gravity, long seen as a fundamental force, could be a sign that the universe runs like a computer simulation.
The research, published in the journal AIP Advances in May 2025, argues that gravity is not a mysterious force between objects but rather the result of an informational process within the universe’s structure. The study suggests that the universe may operate under a kind of cosmic code, similar to how computers compress data to conserve space and energy.
This “informational law” means the universe reduces complexity by grouping matter, which we experience as gravity pulling things together – planets, stars, and galaxies.
This new view uses information theory, a branch of science that studies how data is stored and transmitted.
Unlike the known physical law, where disorder tends to increase, this theory suggests that information disorder decreases as the universe seeks simplicity. In this sense, the gathering of matter is a natural process that makes information easier to manage, much like how computers reduce file sizes.
The research challenges traditional physics by suggesting that space itself is made up of tiny cells of information, much like pixels on a screen. These cells hold the data that forms the universe. When objects cluster, the overall information becomes simpler, and this effect creates what we call gravity.
The lead researcher believes that this informational force closely matches the laws of gravity formulated by Isaac Newton centuries ago.
The idea that the universe works like software running on a cosmic computer is still a theory, but one that grows stronger as scientists discover more about the nature of reality.
While there is no final proof yet that we live in a simulation, this study adds new evidence that the universe behaves in ways similar to a programmed system. Scientists hope further research will help reveal whether reality is built on code, which could change our understanding of physics and existence itself.
