The Nigerian Senate has approved a bill upgrading the Federal College of Education, Gumel, in Jigawa State, to a full-fledged Federal University of Education. The move is part of broader legislative efforts to expand access to higher education nationwide.
Alongside the approval for Gumel, the Senate also passed legislation for the upgrade of the Federal College of Education (Technical) in Asaba, Delta State, and the Federal College of Education (Special) in Karaye, Kano State. According to lawmakers, these approvals aim to enhance teacher training and professional development, while addressing the increasing demand for quality education across Nigeria’s regions.
Once fully established, the new universities are expected to receive dedicated funding, expand enrolment capacity, and play a key role in developing Nigeria’s education workforce. The development comes amid ongoing concerns about the quality and accessibility of tertiary education in the country. It suggests the federal government’s intention to invest in long-term human capital development.
