SSEC Organises NESST-Smithsonian Convening 2025

The Smithsonian Science Education Centre (SSEC) has organised the inaugural in-person Network for Emergent Socio-Scientific Thinking (NESST) convening for 2025 in Washington, DC.

The event, held from November 15-20, brought together teachers, youth, STEM professionals, scientists, and community leaders to discuss education and solutions for building a sustainable planet.

A paper presented at the convening introduced the concept of emergent impact networks as an approach to tackling complex socio-scientific challenges, including climate change and biodiversity, through STEM education.

In addition, the paper discussed how networks can unite educators, young people, scientists, researchers, and cultural institutions to boost STEM Education for Sustainable Development (STEM4SD).

While speaking at the event, Dr Awoyemi, the IITA Forest Centre Manager, Conservation Biologist, and NESST Scientist Ambassador for 2025, applauded the SSEC for the opportunity to represent IITA and Nigeria on a global stage.
