Medical services at the Federal University of Lafia Teaching Hospital (FUTH) have been grounded following the nationwide strike declared by the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD).
A visit to the hospital revealed that patients had been evacuated, while departments, including the emergency, outpatient, and antenatal units, were deserted. The strike, which began last Saturday, has severely disrupted access to healthcare in Lafia.
During a compliance inspection, NARD State President, Dr Jude Yepowudu, lamented the poor working conditions of resident doctors, accusing the government of neglect. “Many of us can no longer afford to fuel our cars, pay rent, or meet basic needs. This strike is our collective demand for better welfare,” he said.
Some patients expressed frustration after being turned away from antenatal services, appealing to the government to meet the doctors’ demands.
Meanwhile, private hospitals in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State, are experiencing a surge in patient admissions as the industrial action persists.
