Students and Farmers to Benefit from NiMet Climate Initiative

For farmers in Nigeria, unpredictable rains and worsening droughts are more than statistics—they affect livelihoods, food supply, and daily life. A new initiative between the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and Landmark University aims to help communities better prepare for climate extremes.

The collaboration, formalised through a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding, will combine NiMet’s weather expertise with Landmark University’s research capabilities to improve climate data collection, early warning systems, and practical education.

NiMet Director-General Prof. Charles Anosike said the partnership will support research in flood analysis, drought monitoring, and agricultural planning. “This is about equipping communities with timely, actionable information,” he said.

Landmark University’s Pro-Chancellor, Dr Olumuyiwa Oyeniyi, added that the university will facilitate research, staff exchanges, and community outreach to translate scientific findings into solutions for farmers, policymakers, and students.

The initiative also seeks to integrate climate science into academic programs, giving students the skills to tackle environmental challenges. By linking scientific research with local needs, the project promises practical benefits for Nigeria’s most vulnerable populations.
