When the Alberta Institute Wenzhou Medical University (AIWMU) opened in 2020, it set out to give young Chinese medical students something rare: a chance to train under two universities, two traditions and two medical cultures.
The partnership between the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry in Canada and Wenzhou Medical University in China runs a five-year clinical medicine programme — the first jointly delivered international medical degree of its kind in China.
Teaching is shared by faculty from both institutions, exposing students to modern and traditional Chinese medicine as well as Canadian clinical practice.
The institute’s mission centres on producing capable, compassionate doctors who understand healthcare beyond national borders. Its curriculum adapts to scientific and medical advances, preparing students for patient-focused work in busy clinics and hospitals.
Through special training placements, teaching-scholar programmes and a growing international education platform in Wenzhou, both universities aim to improve healthcare practice and strengthen medical education.
Students graduate with a University of Alberta Bachelor of Biomedicine after year four and a WMU medical degree after year five. Around 357 students are currently enrolled, gaining the cultural awareness and clinical grounding needed to meet China’s changing healthcare needs.
