Students of the Federal School of Survey in Oyo State are unhappy with the management of their institution over the deplorable state of the school’s hostel facilities.
A recent media report has revealed that in the past years, no proper maintenance has been done on the hostel. The facility now looks frail, abandoned and dingy. For example, there are cracks all over the walls, leaking roofs, and broken windows are evident, and there has been no steady electricity or water supply for many months. Students claim that poor living conditions are negatively impacting their health and academic performance.
One student said they use power banks to study at night due to frequent blackouts. Another complained about having to walk a long distance just to fetch water. Many toilets and bathrooms are damaged, and some hostels have only one working toilet for many students. Because of the problems, some students have moved off-campus, even though it is more expensive.
Attempts to speak with the school’s management were unsuccessful, but staff members acknowledged that renovation requests had been overlooked due to a lack of funding.
