Many Nigerian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are not fully prepared to adopt artificial intelligence (AI), a new study by eTranzact International Plc and the Enterprise Development Centre (EDC) of Pan-Atlantic University shows.
The report, Artificial Intelligence Readiness of Nigerian SMEs, highlights AI’s potential to transform industries, business models, operations, and customer engagement, while identifying gaps in awareness, access, and practical use. Launching the report in Lagos, eTranzact CEO Niyi Toluwalope said the study reflects the company’s commitment to supporting over 39 million SMEs, which are key to Nigeria’s economic growth and job creation.
“The research shows strong enthusiasm for AI solutions, but many entrepreneurs still struggle to understand and apply the technology effectively,” he said. EDC’s Olawale Anifowose added that awareness is rising in the ICT and creative sectors, but adoption remains low in agriculture and fashion.
The study, which surveyed over 5,500 participants across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, recommends government investment in locally relevant AI tools, supportive policies, and private-sector efforts to make AI more accessible and build skills through education and partnerships.
