Sunnybrook Research Institute (SRI), named one of Canada’s Top 10 research hospitals for 2025


Sunnybrook Research Institute (SRI) has been named one of Canada’s Top 10 research hospitals for 2025, moving up from ninth place in 2024 to seventh, according to the annual Top 40 Research Hospitals list by RE$EARCH Infosource Inc.


The ranking assesses hospitals based on total research funding, research intensity, and income per scientist. Sunnybrook reported research spending of more than $178 million in the past fiscal year, a 12 per cent increase from the previous year. The institute ranked fourth for research intensity, with 11.5 per cent of its total hospital spending devoted to research, and eighth for researcher intensity, with an average of $415,000 spent per scientist.


The Top 40 list draws on data from the Canadian Research Hospitals Database, including government and non-government grants, contributions, and contracts.


SRI’s strong performance highlights its growing role in advancing clinical and biomedical research in Canada. The institute conducts studies across multiple fields, from clinical trials to commercialisation of innovations, contributing to both patient care and scientific development nationwide.
