The State University of New York (SUNY) Oswego has signed its first institutional agreement in Nigeria as part of a broader drive to strengthen academic and cultural links across Africa.
President Peter O. Nwosu, a Nigerian-born academic, led a high-level delegation to Nigeria, Kenya and Rwanda under the SUNY Africa Initiative, launched last year to expand international education, workforce development and student mobility.
In Ibadan, Oswego sealed a formal partnership with the University of Ibadan and held talks with Obafemi Awolowo University and the University of Lagos. The delegation also showcased SUNY programmes to secondary school students in Lagos.
The team included SUNY Provost Melur Ramasubramanian, SUNY Polytechnic Institute President Wole Soboyejo and SUNY Fredonia President Stephen H. Kolison Jr. They met government officials, university leaders and alumni across the three countries.
In Kenya, the group engaged vice chancellors of 35 universities and ministries of education and foreign affairs, while in Rwanda, they focused on innovation and workforce development.
SUNY says the mission reflects its long-term commitment to Africa, the world’s fastest-growing hub for international education demand.
