Nigeria’s plan to reform its technical education curriculum has drawn cautious reactions from education and economic experts, who warn that success will hinge on practical implementation rather than policy design.
Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, announced last week that the curriculum has been revised to reduce overload, strengthen trade skills, and align with global standards. Twenty-six trade areas were streamlined to meet the needs of Nigeria’s manufacturing, services, and digital economy, preparing students for modern industrial demands.
However, Mr Bello Audu, Chief Consultant at Economic DTGES and Innovation Economist at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, said policy on paper is insufficient. “Proper implementation has to be in place, with quality control mechanisms to ensure the new curriculum is being delivered at all levels,” he said.
Audu also stressed the need for synergy between federal, state, and local governments, as well as adequate resources and manpower. He suggested piloting the curriculum in federal schools before nationwide rollout to identify challenges and determine resource needs.
He highlighted schools already offering vocational training, such as GCC Girls’ Academy in Maiduguri, noting that formal integration into the curriculum would give such initiatives greater impact. “Once it is part of the academic calendar, carried out weekly, it becomes more effective,” Audu said.
