The House of Representatives has approved the establishment of four new federal universities in Borno, Imo, Kaduna and Kano States to expand access to higher education in Nigeria.
This followed the adoption of reports presented by the Chairman of the House Committee on University Education, Abubakar Fulata (APC–Jigawa), during Tuesday’s plenary.
The approved bills include the establishment of the Federal University of Technology, Kaduna; the Federal University, Biu, Borno; Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri; and Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano.
Fulata explained that the universities would strengthen research, innovation and teacher education while addressing manpower needs in key sectors. He added that the institutions would also promote academic excellence and contribute to the nation’s socio-economic development.
In line with legislative procedures, the bills will be transmitted to the Senate for concurrence before being sent to the President for assent.
