The State University of New York (SUNY) has expanded its Africa Initiative through a two-week mission to Nigeria, Kenya, and Rwanda, aimed at advancing academic, cultural, and economic collaborations.
Led by SUNY Oswego President Peter O. Nwosu, who returned to Nigeria with a high-level delegation, the visit reinforced the system’s long-term strategy to boost global competitiveness by deepening international partnerships.
The delegation included SUNY Provost Melur Ramasubramanian, SUNY Polytechnic Institute President Wole Soboyejo, and SUNY Fredonia President Stephen H. Kolison Jr. They formalised new agreements, met with government officials, and engaged with students and alumni across the three countries.
In Nigeria, SUNY signed its first institutional agreement with the University of Ibadan, while also visiting Obafemi Awolowo University and the University of Lagos.
In Kenya, the delegation held talks with Vice Chancellors of 35 universities, engaged with ministries of Education and Foreign Affairs, and met with stakeholders at a U.S. Embassy reception.
In Rwanda, there were discussions with the University of Rwanda, Rwanda Polytechnic, and three cabinet ministers centred on innovation, workforce development, and student mobility.
Launched in 2024, the SUNY Africa Initiative aims to broaden strategic engagement with African institutions through education, research, and cultural exchange.
