Taraba College Says There Was No Wrongdoing in Staff Promotions

The College of Education in Zing, Taraba State, denies the reports that accused it of unfair staff promotions.

In a statement, the school’s Director of Information, Boniface Yakubu, stated that the story published in a national newspaper was false and lacked proof.

He said the school did not initially want to respond but later decided to speak up to clear its name.

Yakubu explained that promotions in the college are done fairly and openly. The process involves four stages: school management, a larger management committee, the Appointment and Promotion Committee (A&PC), and the Governing Council.

He stated that the larger management committee comprises members from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Finance, the Academic Board, and union leaders from COEASU and NASU. This committee reviews each promotion under the January 2020 Revised Scheme of Service.

Yakubu also said that when there is no Governing Council, the Ministry of Education handles promotions. However, when the council is in place, promotions are processed through A&PC and then receive final approval from the council.

He strongly denied all the claims in the newspaper, including that qualified staff were ignored, junior staff were promoted over senior staff, staff facing discipline were promoted, or that the Governing Council chairman influenced decisions.

The college’s Provost, Professor Ejika Sambo, asked staff to bring any complaints directly to the management instead of going to the media anonymously.

He said everyone should work together to help the college grow, in line with the plans of Taraba State Governor Dr Agbu Kefas.

The college stated that it remains fully committed to being fair, open, and focused on providing quality education in all its endeavours.
