The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) has urged the Federal Government to fully implement the Teachers’ Retirement Age Law in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
In a statement signed by ASUSS President Comrade Sola Adigun and Secretary General Comrade Kenneth Okoh, the union commended Buhari’s approval of the 2022 law, which increased the retirement age for teachers to 65 or 40 years of service. However, they expressed concern that many states have yet to enforce the law two years after its passage. ASUSS said this delay undermines Buhari’s legacy and shortchanges teachers.
The union called on President Bola Tinubu to engage governors and agencies to ensure the law is implemented nationwide. They said truly honouring Buhari means continuing the progressive education reforms he introduced. “Let us not just mourn Buhari. Let us honour him by carrying out the policies he championed for teachers and Nigeria,” ASUSS said.
