Emmanuel Daraloye, Nigerian music journalist, honoured by the Department of History, UI
Nigerian music journalist Emmanuel Daraloye has been honoured by the Department of History at the University of Ibadan for his contributions to the preservation of Black history and culture.
Daraloye received a Certificate of Appreciation during the department’s annual Black History Celebration held on October 10, 2025, at the Faculty of Arts. The event featured notable scholars, including Prof Ademola Ajayi, Dr Taariqa-Rahamat Ilupeju, and Mrs Pamela Otuka Oriyimi.
As a panellist at the session themed “Reclaiming African Cultural Heritage as a Weapon Against Social Decay in Contemporary Nigeria,” Daraloye highlighted the role of music in shaping moral and social consciousness.
“Music can embed moral lessons and cultural values essential for addressing today’s social challenges,” he said.
The Afrocritik Senior Music Critic, who recently joined Premium Times, noted that while some Nigerian artistes use their platforms for social change, more can be done.
The student association president, Adeosun Silver, commended Daraloye’s “impactful and inspiring” engagement.
Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s top culture writers, Daraloye has published extensively on Nigerian music and co-founded a music criticism internship with Indy Press in 2024.
