The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI), Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, has promised that the university will continue to support and maintain its strong partnership with the Pan African University Life and Earth Sciences Institute (PAULESI), which focuses on health, agriculture, and environmental sciences.
He gave this assurance during a courtesy visit from the newly appointed Director of PAULESI, Professor Mubo A. Sonibare, a Professor of Pharmacognosy from UI’s Faculty of Pharmacy. Professor Adebowale congratulated Professor Sonibare on her appointment and commended her for observing official protocols. He reminded everyone that PAULESI is an initiative of the African Union Commission (AUC) created to boost science and technology development in Africa through quality education.
The Vice-Chancellor recalled that UI competed and won the right to host PAULESI for the West African region, making it one of five such institutes across Africa. He also expressed confidence that with a new director in place, the institute would make even greater progress. While acknowledging some of the current challenges PAULESI is facing, he assured the director that the university is committed to helping with improved facilities and better support for the growing number of international students. He also encouraged Professor Sonibare to lead with dedication, honesty, and hard work.
In her remarks, Professor Sonibare thanked the university for its ongoing support and stated that her visit aimed to strengthen collaboration between PAULESI and UI. She emphasised that PAULESI was established to help Africans find homegrown solutions to the continent’s problems without depending on the West.
She added that the institute has already contributed to UI’s rising global ranking and called for continued cooperation to achieve the complete vision of the PAULESI founders.
