Nigerian schools have been encouraged to participate in a new international competition that rewards innovation in education. The Global Schools Prize, launched by the Varkey Foundation in partnership with UNESCO, will distribute $1 million across 10 categories, with one overall winner receiving $500,000.
Organisers say the award aims to spotlight schools as centres of innovation as well as learning, showcasing how they can drive social and economic progress.
Peter Tabichi, the Kenyan teacher who won the Global Teacher Prize in 2019, appealed directly to Nigerian institutions to apply, praising their “remarkable ways to build brighter futures” despite the challenges they face.
Winners will be drawn from areas including artificial intelligence, inclusive education, peacebuilding and student wellbeing. Longlisted schools will receive a Global Schools Prize Badge and join a global network to exchange ideas and form partnerships.
UNESCO estimates Nigeria has more than 20 million out-of-school children – the highest in the world. Advocates argue that while access is crucial, innovation within schools is equally essential to enhance learning outcomes and prepare young people for the future.
Applications are open at globalschoolsprize.org, with the first winners to be announced at a global education summit in 2025.
