Clinical lecturers at the University of Calabar have ended their strike and returned to work after settling a disagreement over the selection process for a new Vice Chancellor.
The lecturers, under the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), went on strike on June 13, claiming they were unfairly excluded from applying for the Vice-Chancellor role because the job advertisement only allowed PhD holders, not medical fellows.
MDCAN’s local leaders, Dr Patience Odusolu and Dr Ehiosun Aigbomian, demanded a fresh advert. MDCAN National President, Prof. Muhammad Muhammad, explained that clinical training follows a different route — residency and fellowships, not PhDs. The issue was resolved after Nigeria’s Education Minister, Dr Tunji Alausa, stepped in. UNICAL has now issued an updated advert allowing both PhD holders and qualified medical fellows to apply.
