Prof Offiong Offiong, the new VC of the University of Calabar
The new Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Offiong Offiong, has committed to ending admission racketeering and illegal mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps. He pledged his investiture as the institution’s 12th vice chancellor.
Offiong said his administration will operate on the principles of transparency, accountability, and strong attention to students’ welfare. He stressed that the university will maintain zero tolerance for indiscipline and will enforce all regulations guiding admissions and NYSC mobilisation.
He noted that the central admissions committee has been reactivated to ensure full compliance with JAMB and NYSC rules. Any staff member found involved in fraudulent practices, he added, will face sanctions.
The Vice-Chancellor outlined plans to improve infrastructure, expand examination spaces, and enhance classroom conditions to safeguard assessment integrity. He also promised more work-study opportunities, scholarships, and partnerships to support financially challenged students.
Offiong highlighted community engagement, environmental sustainability, and global collaboration as additional priorities for his tenure. He thanked President Bola Tinubu and the institution’s governing council for the confidence reposed in him.
His predecessor, Florence Obi, handed over the mace of office and urged him to remain committed to producing graduates grounded in character and learning.
