The University of Jos is mourning the death of eight of its students who were killed in a road accident in the early hours of Saturday along Zaria Road, near the New Stadium area of the city.
The students were reportedly returning from a social event when the crash occurred at about 03:00 local time.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Tanko Ishaya, described the incident as a “monumental loss” to the university. He spoke as he led members of the management team to visit injured students receiving treatment at the Jos University Teaching Hospital and the Plateau State Specialist Hospital.
“This is a painful and heartbreaking loss. These were vibrant young people with great potential, and their deaths have left a vacuum that will be difficult to fill,” Prof Ishaya said, as he sympathised with the families of the victims and wished the injured a quick recovery.
Among those killed were the president of the National Association of Plateau State Students at the university, Datong Maipkop Magnus, and the president of the Faculty of Social Sciences Students Association, Angelo Gyang.
One survivor, Nandom Sati, a final-year Criminology and Security Studies student, said the bus they were travelling in collided with a trailer while attempting to overtake another vehicle.
University officials also visited the mortuary where the bodies were taken and later inspected the crash site. The vice-chancellor urged students to exercise caution and prioritise safety when travelling.
