The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos (UNIJOS), Professor Tanko Ishaya, has called on Nigerian youths to take an active role in political leadership, warning that the country cannot achieve sustainable development without their engagement.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Nigerian Youth Congress (NYC) executives in Abuja, Prof. Ishaya said politics is not inherently corrupt. However, it becomes so when principled young leaders fail to step forward. “Youth participation is not a favour; it is a national necessity,” he stressed, describing Nigerian youths as a “sleeping giant reawakening.”
The newly elected NYC President, Engr. Jethro Terhile Annum outlined an ambitious agenda to tackle youth unemployment and socio-economic challenges. Highlighting that over 80 million young Nigerians remain jobless, he warned of a looming crisis if urgent action is not taken.
Annum launched two major initiatives: the Digital Naija Initiative, a programme to train one million youths in ICT and Artificial Intelligence while establishing 500 tech hubs nationwide, and the Green Harvest Revolution, aimed at making agriculture a profitable, youth-driven enterprise on 10 million hectares of government land.
The event concluded with the NYC Board of Trustees pledging full support for Annum’s leadership, commending his vision for empowering Nigeria’s youth to drive national development.
