The University of Lagos community has been thrown into mourning following the death of Balogun Damilola, President of the Faculty of Education, who drowned at a Lagos beach on Saturday.
Local reports suggest the incident occurred during a recreational outing with friends. Witnesses said Damilola, known among peers as Ayanfe Eledumare, was attempting a backflip near the shore when he was swept away by a wave. Efforts to rescue him reportedly failed. His body was recovered the next morning at Museyo Beach in Ibeju-Lekki, about two kilometres from where he went missing.
Damilola had only recently been elected Faculty President, having served as Vice President the previous year. His death has triggered an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and friends who described him as an energetic and ambitious leader.
One user on X, who identified himself as a former roommate, wrote: “He was my roommate—always brought Lacoco and the likes to the room: a real vibe, man. Moreover, bro just became the President of his faculty… RIP Balogun Damilola.”
As of Monday, the university management and local authorities had yet to issue an official statement. The tragedy has renewed calls for better safety measures at Lagos beaches.
