The Faculty of Environmental Sciences at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has commenced a two-day international conference on the impact of new technologies on the planning and development of buildings and cities. The event started on Wednesday, June 18, 2025. People from Nigeria and other countries came, including experts and researchers. The theme was “Emerging Technologies and the Built Environment.” The opening was held at the faculty hall, with speeches from top university leaders.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, was represented by Professor Timothy Nubi, Director of the Centre for Housing and Sustainable Development. She emphasised the importance of innovation in designing modern and enduring buildings, encouraging researchers and builders to take the lead.
The Dean of the Faculty, Professor Modupe Omirin, warmly welcomed the guests. Professor Olumide Adenuga, who led the conference planning, said the faculty is committed to research and finding real-life solutions to today’s building challenges. One of the key events was a virtual speech by Professor Clinton Aigbavboa from the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. He compared how rich and developing countries use new technologies in construction and called on African schools to use methods that fit their environment and needs.
A panel session followed, led by Professor Mike Adebamowo of the University of Lagos Business School. Panellists included Architect Ladi Lewis, Dr Emmanuel Aladeloba, Estate Surveyor Rogba Orimalade, and Quantity Surveyor Femi Falusi. They all shared ideas based on their extensive experiences and expertise.
