The University of Lagos (UNILAG) School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS) hosted an interactive session on Friday, July 4, 2025, featuring Dr Blessing Emerenini, a Nigerian mathematician from the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. During the session, which drew various stakeholders from the university, Dr Emerenini shared insights on how data, models, and computer simulations have enabled people from all over the world to learn more about tiny living organisms, such as bacteria and viruses. She spoke on the topic “The Invisible Architects” and explained that scientists use math to study how these microbes behave. She also shared how her team uses computers to study how bacteria and viruses interact in people with a disease called Cystic Fibrosis. Her simple explanation of complex science impressed students and lecturers. The SPGS Dean, Professor Abraham Osinubi, praised her and urged others to explore similar research partnerships. Dr Emerenini received an Award of Excellence from the school for her remarkable work and was officially added to the institution’s list of honoured researchers.
