Participants at the 3rd UNILAG Int’l Conference & Fair on Land & Development
The University of Lagos convened the 3rd International Conference and Fair on Land and Development, alongside the 7th Lateef Jakande Annual Lecture, with a focus on sustainable land use and urban infrastructure in Africa.
The three-day event, organised by the Centre for Housing and Sustainable Development (CHSD), brought together academics, policymakers, and industry leaders to discuss practical solutions for Africa’s rapidly urbanising cities.
Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, stressed that by 2050, Africa’s cities will accommodate an additional 950 million people, with Nigeria projected to reach nearly 400 million. She called for innovation, collaboration, and inclusive planning to turn urban growth into an economic opportunity rather than a crisis.
Chudi Ubosi of Ubosi Eleh & Co. highlighted Nigeria’s land administration challenges, noting that less than 10% of the country’s land has an official title and that the Land Use Act, nearly 50 years old, requires modernisation to support efficient urban development.
The conference explored climate-resilient designs, innovative financing, and community-led solutions, underscoring the need for strong collaboration among government, academia, and industry to achieve sustainable, inclusive urban growth across Africa.
