UNILAG Postgraduate Students Lead Outreach for Children, Vulnerable Groups in Yaba
The University of Lagos Postgraduate Students’ Community, in partnership with the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority, Risibello Foundation, and Iyanda Sidikat Iyabo Group, donated learning materials to 300 pupils in Yaba, Lagos.
The two-day outreach included St. Francis Junior Grammar School, Modupe Cole Orphanage, and a community development programme.
Items distributed included writing materials, socks, sanitary pads, and prizes for outstanding academic performance. The initiative aimed to inspire students, promote mentorship, and foster social responsibility among postgraduates.
Bukola, a mentor at the event, stressed the importance of focus and determination, urging pupils to avoid negative social media influences. Iyabo Iyanda highlighted the need for globally aligned curricula to prepare Nigerian children for leadership.
Ezekiel Gbemisola, President of the postgraduate community, said the programme encourages social responsibility and aims to create a framework that could be replicated in other institutions. Vice President Alice Amajama called on postgraduates to engage in community service to make a positive impact on society.
At Modupe Cole Orphanage, which houses 476 individuals, including 318 abandoned children, Vice Principal Mr Ajani expressed gratitude for the support.
The outreach concluded with environmental sanitation, free medical care and medication distribution in the Iwaya neighbourhood.
