The Nigerian Young Academy (NYA) has elected Professor Temitope Olabisi Onuminya of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) as its new President, marking the first time a woman has led the body since its founding 15 years ago.
Prof. Onuminya, a Lecturer at the Department of Botany, is known for her work in Plant Systematics and Conservation. She will now head the 8th Executive Council of the Academy. The council is a group of young Nigerian scholars committed to research, mentorship, and using science to support national growth.
Her emergence has been hailed as a landmark for the NYA and a significant boost for women in leadership within the academic space.
UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, sent her congratulations on behalf of the school, describing the appointment as well-deserved. She expressed confidence that Prof. Onuminya’s leadership will enrich scientific discussions and motivate more young academics across the country.
