UNILAG Publishes Book on Bayelsa Governor’s Leadership

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has completed a book assessing the leadership and governance style of Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri.

The project, unveiled on Thursday during a visit to Government House, Yenagoa, by Prof. John Oyefara, Managing Director of UNILAG Consult, also includes proposals for a public lecture series and a professorial chair in the university’s Department of Political Science in honour of Diri.

Oyefara said the book, titled Leadership Chronicles of Governor Douye Diri, reflects an independent evaluation of the governor’s performance in office, covering infrastructure and human capacity development. Lead editor Prof Hope Eghagha noted the research involved interviews and a structured assessment based on international leadership standards.

Diri, in response, welcomed the initiative, describing it as a “pleasant surprise” and highlighting the importance of documenting achievements for posterity. He also noted plans to establish a leadership institute in Bayelsa State to prepare future political office holders.

Governor Diri, who assumed office in February 2020 following a Supreme Court ruling, is recognised for inclusive governance and development-oriented policies. UNILAG’s project marks a rare scholarly honour, combining academic research with practical leadership lessons, and aims to inspire public officials and students alike.
