The University of Ilorin says it has now produced 5,082 medical doctors since the establishment of its medical Faculty. The Vice Chancellor, Prof Wahab Egbewole, announced the figure at the 40th induction ceremony of the College of Health Sciences, where 150 new doctors were inducted into the profession.
Prof Egbewole urged the graduates to embrace digital skills shaping modern healthcare, saying the demands of the field go beyond classroom lessons. He described the cohort as a “golden set,” inducted during the university’s 50th anniversary, and encouraged them to uphold the institution’s reputation through competent and compassionate care.
The Provost of the College, Prof Biodun Alabi, reminded the new doctors that medicine is rooted in service, ethics and non-discrimination. He encouraged them to listen to patients, maintain confidentiality and embody the discipline and dignity the profession requires.
Guest speaker and alumnus, Dr Festus Oshoba, told the inductees that medicine is “a calling and a covenant,” urging them to avoid unethical practices and commit to lifelong learning. The Kwara NMA chair, Prof A. O. Afolabi, also charged them to serve with humility.
The ceremony featured the oath-taking conducted by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and presentations of awards to outstanding graduates.
