Education experts have urged Nigerian universities to prioritise the development of soft and marketable skills, enabling graduates to secure employment more easily. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof. Afolabi Lesi, and other experts made this call during the final event of UNILAG’s Career Service Programme, held in partnership with ICLED Business School, Lekki.
The event, themed “Solving the Graduate Unemployment Crisis in Nigeria: The Way Forward,” brought students together to showcase what they had learned in career and leadership training. Participants at the career development programme had been trained in skills such as people skills, career planning, workplace readiness, and leadership. They also took part in mock interviews, mentorship sessions, and resume writing to improve their confidence and employability.
The experts stressed that while academic knowledge is important, employers now demand practical skills such as communication, problem-solving, and leadership.
