The University of Ibadan (UI) has received international recognition from the American Chemical Society (ACS) for its Bachelor’s Degree programme in Chemistry. This global endorsement means that UI’s chemistry curriculum now meets the international standards set by the ACS Guidelines for Chemistry Programmes around the world.
The Department of Chemistry at UI, known as the oldest in Nigeria, was established in 1948. Since then, it has grown to become the most prominent and most respected chemistry department in the country. It supports many science-based faculties and runs both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
Over the years, graduates from the department have made significant contributions in academics, industry, research, and government institutions across Nigeria. According to the ACS Committee on Professional Training, which conducted a detailed review, UI’s chemistry curriculum is both intense and well-rounded. It covers all the key areas of chemistry — analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry (ABIOP). The committee also praised the department for offering specialised courses, such as medicinal and industrial chemistry.
The committee was also impressed by the department’s commitment to laboratory safety, intense research, and continuous improvement of its facilities. This ACS recognition will last for six years, with a yearly review to track progress and maintain high standards. The university’s management says this global honour is a significant achievement and demonstrates UI’s commitment to academic excellence and high-quality research. It also puts the Chemistry Department in the spotlight as one of the best in Africa.
