The University of Port Harcourt has launched a new programme called TAGDev 2.0, designed to enhance farming and food production in Africa. The programme is supported by the Mastercard Foundation, RUFORUM, and 12 other African universities.
The launch event happened on June 7, 2025. Many important guests, including university leaders, students, and partners from various African schools, were present at the launch. Commenting on the programme, Professor Owunari Georgewill, the Vice Chancellor, said the university had joined the programme to help Nigeria and Africa grow through improved farming practices.
TAGDev 2.0 will offer free scholarships to students at the undergraduate, master’s, and PhD levels. It aims to teach young people how to become farming experts, enabling them to contribute to solving food problems in Africa. The programme will also support small businesses and encourage innovative ideas to enhance farming practices, creating additional employment opportunities. At the event, experts conducted workshops, discussions, and talks. Everyone agreed that for the programme to succeed, schools, farmers, companies, and governments must all work together. They stated that this teamwork is crucial to ensure that Africa has sufficient food in the future.
TAGDev 2.0 will provide young Africans with the training, tools, and opportunities they need to lead the way in Africa’s farming sector. UniPort’s role in the programme is viewed as a significant step toward improving farming in Nigeria and across the continent.
