The Africa Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Power and Energy Development (ACE-SPED) at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has stated that with proper funding, it has the capacity to provide a consistent power supply in the country.
Prof. Emenike Ejiogu, the centre director, stated that the centre’s Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) gasification plant can help achieve this.
“RDF is a waste-to-energy facility that converts processed municipal solid waste (MSW) into a fuel, then uses a gasification process to create a syngas. The syngas can then be used to produce electricity and heat. The process involves pre-treating waste to remove non-combustible materials.”
He emphasised that the centre has already produced 100kVA and 500kVA prototypes of the RDF gasification plant and demonstrated its work in UNN.
While explaining that other power sources will still be used in the country, he emphasised that the RDF gasification plant will produce more affordable and reliable energy.
